History

The Sundowner Hotel has been at the heart of Millmerran for well over a century. Originally built in 1891 on Walpole Street as the Domville, it was renamed the Imperial Hotel in 1911, before a suspicious fire destroyed it in 1924. A year later, a new two-storey country hotel rose on the current Campbell Street site, built in the classic late colonial style. Back then, the lounge area even housed a fruit shop, barbers, and a billiard saloon, making it a true gathering place for the local community.

Over the years, the Sundowner has grown and evolved alongside the town. Extensions in 1956 and the addition of the lounge and bottle shop in 1976 helped shape the hotel we know today. It became the Sundowner Hotel in 1976, was known as the Ram’s Head Hotel in 1992, and proudly returned to the Sundowner Hotel in 2023 under the Volz family. Today, it remains a welcoming country pub where locals and visitors alike can enjoy a meal, a drink, and a friendly atmosphere – carrying on a rich tradition that’s very much alive.

In 2025 Waymark Hotels, a privately-owned Australian hotel and property group, acquired the Sundowner Hotel. Built over a period of more than 60 years and with a heritage originating in the Queensland outback, the group has been leading projects that have brought vital infrastructure and amenities to communities since the 1950’s.
